Forging Sourcing
Solutions in India

Approved industrial network sourcing for high-integrity closed-die and open-die forged components. Delivering optimized grain flow and internal soundness.

Structural Soundness

Why Source Forged Blanks?

Forging uses localized compressive forces (applied via hammers or hydraulic presses) to plastically deform solid steel billets into shape. Unlike casting or machining from raw bar stock, hot forging realigns the steel's internal grain structure to continuously follow the geometry of the component.

This grain flow continuity dramatically improves resistance to impact, rotational wear, and bending fatigue. Furthermore, the massive compressive pressures completely seal micro-porosities and internal voids within the steel matrix, producing components that meet strict safety standards for critical transmission, hydraulic, and automotive layouts.

Structural Performance

Structural Benefits of Forged Steel

Sourcing from qualified, ISO-certified forging mills ensures consistent performance at the molecular level.

Contoured fiber structure

Grain Flow Realignment

Forging realigns the microstructural fibers along structural radii, increasing shear resistance in gears and crankshaft webs.

Porosity elimination

Internal Soundness

Compressive plastic deformation welds micro-voids and eliminates gas pockets, ensuring uniform material density.

Resilience under load

High Yield Strength

Forged components exhibit elevated tensile and yield limits, allowing engineers to design lighter, more compact sections.

Uniform microstructure

Excellent Machining Response

Coordinated annealing prior to machining ensures predictable cutting tool wear and excellent surface finishes.

Structural predictability

Isotropic Properties

Refining the dendritic grain structure of the cast ingot yields isotropic mechanical properties throughout the part.

Critical safety approval

NDT Class Compliance

Billets are sourced strictly from vacuum-degassed steel mills to comply with ASTM and DIN aerospace standards.

SOURCING WORKFLOW

Sourcing & Heat Treatment Integration at Tapovan

01

Steel Sourcing

Approved mills supply raw carbon, alloy, or stainless billets with full chemical composition certificate tracking.

02

Billet Induction

Billets cut and heated uniformly via induction loops to structural temperatures (1100-1250°C) to avoid scaling.

03

Hot Die Pressing

Billets formed using multi-stage closed dies on 400T to 4000T hammers to ensure continuous internal grain contours.

04

Flash Trimming

Surplus metal trimmed cleanly at high temperature, preserving grain integrity along outer machined boundaries.

05

In-House Normalizing

Forgings normalise inside our controlled furnaces to eliminate internal stresses and homogenize grain networks.

06

Lab QC Testing

Batches undergo microstructural grain sizing, hardness reports, and UT checks before component release.

Frequently Asked

Common questions

Find technical answers about forging sourcing specifications in Rajkot and India.

Closed-die forging (or impression-die forging) utilizes custom-machined dies that completely enclose the heated metal billet, forcing it under high pressure to fill the die cavities. This is ideal for complex, high-volume geometries like crankshafts and steering knuckles. Open-die forging does not enclose the metal, instead shaping it using flat or simple shaped dies. This is typically used for low-volume, large components like massive gear blanks, stepped shafts, and thick rings.

We source across a wide range of materials depending on application requirements. Common carbon steels include EN8 (AISI 1040) and EN9 (AISI 1045). For high-strength gears and shafts, alloy steels like EN19 (AISI 4140), EN24 (AISI 4340), 20MnCr5, and 8620 are standard. Stainless steel grades like SS304, SS316, and duplex alloys are sourced for corrosive marine or chemical valve bodies.

Forging refines the grain structure of the steel and aligns the grain flow lines continuously along the contour of the gear teeth. Unlike machined gear blanks cut directly from rolled bar stock (where the grain flow is severed at the teeth), forged gear blanks maintain a continuous fiber structure. This increases bending fatigue limits and load-carrying capacity by up to 30%.

Yes. Tapovan provides complete turnkey sourcing. We coordinate the raw forging from approved mills, execute the optimal heat treatment cycle (normalizing, annealing, or hardening/tempering) in-house, and can supply components in proof-machined or finished CNC-machined conditions.

For closed-die forgings, we handle weights from 0.5 kg up to 120 kg per component, supporting medium-to-high volume production runs. For open-die forgings and rings, we source parts weighing up to 2000 kg for low-to-medium volume industrial applications.

All critical batches undergo rigorous non-destructive testing (NDT). We employ Ultrasonic Testing (UT) to detect internal porosity or voids, and Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) or Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT) to inspect for surface and sub-surface cracks.

Absolutely. Every shipment is accompanied by a comprehensive Mill Test Certificate (MTC) detailing chemical composition (spectrometer analysis), mechanical properties (tensile strength, yield strength, elongation), hardness values, heat treatment furnace logs, and NDT reports.
